What to Expect at Pelvic Floor Therapy

We understand that pelvic floor therapy is an intimate experience, so we want to let you know what to expect at your first appointment!

Initial evaluation

At the initial evaluation, one of the occupational therapists will assess you internally and externally based on your needs. Externally, we will look at your core and hip strength, flexibility of the hips and back, pelvis position, any scar tissue, and ribcage mobility with breathing. Internally, we will perform an assessment to examine pelvic floor  strength, coordination, relaxation, and endurance. We will also examine scar tissue mobility as needed, sensation, and assess for prolapse. During this assessment, if tension is found in the pelvic floor muscles, your therapist may complete a gentle release to help relieve any pain/tension. This can be compared to the feeling of getting a knot out of your back/shoulders with a massage!

Treatment sessions

A typical treatment session lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour and can include dietary education, bladder/bowel retraining, breathing education, biofeedback, internal release as needed, and education of exercises or stretches. We will talk about how to apply all of these things to your life and functional tasks. The occupational therapist will create specific treatment plans and home exercise programs for patients in order to meet their needs and decrease symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction.

**If you are uncomfortable with internal treatment, it is not required.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a tool that can help you to see the exact amount of relaxation, tension, strength, endurance, and coordination you have in the internal pelvic floor muscles. It is a small device that is inserted internally and has a wire to connect to our computers to graph muscle activity. Patients report an improved sense of awareness and control when using biofeedback as an adjunct to their therapy sessions.
